When looking for vets in Denver, there are many factors to consider. We value our relationships with our pet owners and think it’s important that they get to know us and are confident in our expertise! Below are some profiles telling you a little about our veterinarians and their practice history.

Our Doctors

Mesa's Veterinarians

Stefan RachwalDr. Stephan Rachwal, DVM

Dr. Stefan Rachwal came to us as a student at Wheat Ridge High School. His intelligence and love of cats "forced" us to keep track of him throughout college at CSU and then keep him as a veterinarian when he graduated from CSU's College of Veterinary Medicine in 1984. He became an owner of Mesa Veterinary Hospital a few years later and has kept his special interest not only in cats, but also in any part of internal medicine. He is our "walking book of knowledge!" For the past ten years, he has been recognized by the Colorado Academy of Veterinary Practice, which means he gets more than 50 hours of Continuing Education per year.  He likes biking and working out downtown at the gym. Stef has participated in the Pet Loss Support Committee and other elected positions for the Denver Area Veterinary Medical Society for well over 20 years and we support him totally in this important endeavor.

Steve Batch, DVMDr. Steve Batch

Dr. Steve Batch is a high school classmate of Stefan's from Wheat Ridge High School and we met him at about the same time. (Lots of stories there!) Steve went to an internship out in West Los Angeles after he graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine at CSU. After an intense year in California, he and his wife, Martha, came back to us in 1984. They have 2 beautiful daughters here in Colorado and they live in Arvada. He is one of the four owners of Mesa Veterinary Hospital, one of the most highly regarded vets in Denver and has been instrumental in our tremendous growth and success. Steve has special interests in everything, but especially internal medicine, surgery and oncology. He handles a lot of our exotics cases as well.

Christine Horst, DVMDr. Christine Horst

Dr. Christine Horst, also one of the owners of Mesa Veterinary Hospital, came to us in high school, during an honors externship program from Kent Denver. We recognized her skills and intelligence and kept in touch with her throughout college and even after she graduated from the CSU College of Veterinary Medicine. After working in a small animal practice in Phoenix, she came back to MVH, became one of our vets in Denver, and we are really pleased she did! She and her husband, Wade, spend nearly all of their free time on bicycles and have even had the good fortune to do the Leadville 100 and 24 hours of Moab. They have welcomed their sons, Zak and Josh, into the world since she has been working at MVH. They also share their home with a Bernese Mountain Dog named Ice and Chase, an Australian Shepard.

Kitren Nickerson, DVMDr. Kitren Nickerson

Dr. Kitren Nickerson was a wonderful addition to the Mesa Family. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from CSU in 2001 after receiving her Master's Degree there in 1997 in Physiology. She originally graduated with her B.S. from Cornell University, but her love for Colorado brought her back home to go to school. Kit loves every aspect of working and living with animals as evidenced by her own special herd of dogs, cats and a horse. She spends most of her free time with her horse, Schuyler, training and competing in the sport of eventing. Kit has tremendous energy and enthusiasm and has helped make MVH one of the top veterinary hospitals in Denver.

Suzanne Tousley, DVMDr. Suzanne Tousley

Dr. Suzanne Tousley was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. After graduating from Michigan State University with a BA in interior design, she moved to Denver and worked in design for 5 years before returning to her interest in medicine. She went on to graduate from the College of Veterinary Medicine at CSU and performed a full year internship here in Denver, rotating through surgery, internal and emergency medicine. Suzanne loves the veterinary field as it is always changing and consistently challenging. She lives in Golden with her high-energy family - husband, Tony; daughters, Taya and Celia; and 2 dogs, Stuka and Joey. She has taken up road bicycling after all those years of watching Tony compete in triathlons and they spend as much time as possible outdoors.

Joshua Bub, DVM, DABVPDr. Joshua Bub (Canine and Feline Practice)

Dr. Josh Bub graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Zoology and stayed at UF for veterinary school where he received his DVM in 2008.  He graduated Cum Laude with both degrees.  He started at Mesa when he moved to Colorado in 2011.  Dr. Bub undertook and successfully completed a 3 year process to become certified as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Practitioners in 2014, earning him a specialist certification for Canine and Feline Practice.  Josh lives in Lakewood with his wife Rebecca, their daughters Avery and Mikaela, Golden Retriever Emma, Labradoodle Tucker, and cat Loki.  Josh is an avid mountain biker, and also enjoys skiing, hiking, and cycling, as well as passionately following his Florida Gators!

Julia Katzenbach, DVMDr. Julia Katzenbach

Dr. Julia Katzenbach grew up in the Chicago suburbs and obtained her undergraduate and veterinary degree from the University of Illinois. She then moved to Denver and completed a Small Animal Rotating Internship at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital. Dr. Katzenbach then pursued her true passion of exotic animal medicine and completed a Zoological Medicine and Surgery Internship at Colorado State University. She joined us to work with companion small animals as well as exotic animal pets. She lives in Golden with her dog Carina, her rabbit Gremlin, and her two budgies. She enjoys spending as much time as possible outside and loves hiking, running, climbing, biking, and swimming.

Traveling and Specialist Veterinarians

Charles Pugh, DVM, DACVRDr Charles Pugh

Dr. Charles Pugh is considered one of the top radiologists in the country.  He has been coming to Mesa Veterinary Hospital for over 20 years.  Mesa is fortunate to have access to his expertise on a weekly basis.  Routine ultrasounds are scheduled on Thursdays and all of our radiographs are also reviewed at this time.

Karen Sanderson, DVM, DACVIM (Cardiology)

Dr Karen Sanderson

Mesa is fortunate to have Dr. Sanderson attend to our cardiology cases here at MVH.  She occasionally visits our practice and performs echocardiograms (ultrasound of the heart) and cardiology consults.  She is board certified in internal medicine with specialty in cardiology.  Dr. Sanderson runs Rocky Mountain Veterinary Cardiology and is one of the owners of Alpenglow Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Service.

Carrie (Van De Wiele) Ginieczki, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Cardiology)

Dr. Ginieczki also cares for our cardiac patients here at MVH.  She is at Mesa every other Tuesday for echocardiograms and cardiology consults.  Dr. Ginieczki received her DVM from Texas A&M, and did her residency at Purdue where she was thoroughly trained in echocardiography, the clinical discipline of veterinary cardiology, and catheter-based techniques that offer minimally invasive options at correcting congenital heart disease. She has performed research and published articles related to many aspects of veterinary cardiology. Topics she has covered include therapy for Atrial Fibrillation, anticoagulant therapy and pacemaker patients. Although she enjoyed her research, she is much happier pursuing her primary interest of helping family veterinarians and pet owners diagnose and treat their pets with heart disease. She has a special interest in the clinical treatment of Congestive Heart Failure, Congenital Heart Disease and Electrophysiology (including the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias).

Dr Don KerrihardDon Kerrihard, DVM

Dr. Kerrihard visits Mesa a few times a week to perform orthopedic surgeries. He is a board qualified surgeon and has performed well over 5,000 successful knee surgeries in his career.  He visits on an as needed basis for any knee surgeries (TPLOs, TTAs), other bone surgeries (fracture repairs), or more complicated soft tissue surgeries.

Nancy Tharp, DVM, CVA

Dr. Tharp has been providing acupuncture to Mesa's patients for several years now.  A CSU veterinary school graduate, Dr. Tharp went on to complete her acupuncture training in 2005.  She has also been trained in class IV therapeutic laser.  Her skills have helped many patients with a variety of conditions and we are fortunate to have her expertise available.
